John Logie Bairds
Inventions and Ideas

His big invention was television, he made the mechanical system because he had not the time or funds to do anything else. The magic moment happened when he was shown some selenium, which produced an electrical current when light hit it. He loved photography and he said to mother "It is so great as you can carry memories in your pocket." With the vision of making an electric camera he started to gather things he thought he would need. He had some funding from his earlier activities, so with this he set to work. I don't want to cover the well trodden road of his businesses I want to cover the man as seen by his housekeeper Kathleen Faux. The electric camera soon turned into moving pictures by wire. His early comment to Kathleen and one that he often returned to was how quickly things happened. The time for light to pass was almost instantaneous and the same with electric currents down a wire, the speed was fantastic so this allowed him time between frames shown to "Double Scan" them. Every step was new and presented a problem. The selenium was not sensitive enough, the picture moved on the viewer, and once he was totally perplexed when the scanned image just disappeared into Hyper Space. As he doggedly worked improvements to equipment helped his success. The work was for himself at first it was his fun. Then cash shortages made it Necessary to sell the idea or at least run a Television station. Sadly as is the case with many educated people they become bigoted and short sighted. Look at the world leaders and educators of today. Not father he was always looking at new things and listened to conversations so that all his life he was learning.

Sat on  the very throne of the BBC, that Logie Baird had to deal with was one of these men, who was an old friend who sadly had become an enemy due to envy. He thought of nobody but himself, and he prevented Biard from setting up a studio. The world then had time to catch up with fathers lead and eventually fathers colour television tube was given to the Americans for free. Mother said that dealing with these powerful ,yet backward people, made him very bad tempered at times, his undoubted frustration just boiling over. a He had made a bad marriage but felt guilty about it as he was much older than his wife and felt, in fact knew it was his fault. His wife Margaret was very young and pretty when she was approached by the older famous Baird. She was a budding concert pianist and Bairds love of the piano with his perfect pitch ear helped fuel the romance.

At this time John Logie is working by day and returning late at night. The war started and he soon sent his family down to the south coast for their safety. His family now managed to live in some style as funds from his television company rolled in. He became friends with the rich and famous. His close friend was Winston Churchill who helped defuse his hatred for authority, and with his other friends he had at last time to pursue the occult and physic things that had interested him for so long. This interest was fuelled by the loss of his mother who he loved so much. My mother told me that he said that he carried sadness along wherever he went, whatever fun was around at times just a thought of his mother could make him sad that she was no longer on this earth and he would never see her again. He never said if he had managed to talk to his mother through a spiritualist, but he did try. His true love a young lady he met in a library had married someone else so mother said that sometimes he would be deeply depressed for days then almost in an instant be so elated as if the whole world loved him. Hr was lonely and  very sad at times, truthfully his wife did not understand him. My mother was no better and in those sad times she did her work but left him to brood on what might have been.

His father had married into a wealthy shipbuilding family, which had enabled him to buy the beautiful home, and live in style. John Logie Baird wanted to do the same, with his deep love of music and the arts, the right marriage could have opened doors to these wonderful entertainments. Plus as these doors open then life becomes of a finer existence. Good china, good wine, plenty of clean warm linens, a warm home and no worries just a chance to chase your dreams. As Sods law predicts, he fell deeply in love with a young lady he met in a library, she had class and was certainly  a slim good looking girl who most men wanted. Sadly she was from the wrong side of the tracks, John Logie needed time to consider exactly what to do. He had a trip planned  and he asked her along. She refused to go alone as good ladies did and on Bairds return he was devastated to find out she had married another man. After some hasty negotiations with the new husband a sharing plan was made. She would spend equal time woth both men. It was only when he married that the arrangement stopped as he tried to be faithful to his new bride.

At this time he had done some secret work for the Government on Radar, he had discovered Fibre Optics, and carrying on with his major invention he had learnt to Blow his own cathode ray tubes, then with the help of his artistic housekeeper he managed to make a full colour television with 1000 to 1800 line clarity, all before 1945. The Americans had spent £75000,000 trying to make colour television and had failed. They waited and when John sadly died they stole his patents, now at last they had colour television but here in the UK the some what stupid BBC ignored it and we had to wait many more years before the stupid leaders thought fit to broadcast in full colour.

At times I must admit I am ashamed at what out leaders have done, and wonder where all the far seeing people were. had they all emigrated?
